Short breaks

Short breaks are activities for disabled children and young people up to 17 years old who live in Hackney, receive disability living allowance at middle rate or above and don’t receive a care support package from the disabled children’s service. They allow a disabled child or young person to have an enjoyable break away from their main carer, and give their carer a break from their caring responsibilities.

To apply, complete the application form and provide written evidence that your child receives disability living allowance at the middle rate or above. If you have any queries or need support in filling out your application, contact Hackney Ark on 020 7014 7109 or email

Hackney Families Together

Hackney Families Together is a joint PCT, Learning Trust and London Borough of Hackney group and is hosted jointly by City & Hackney Carers Centre and Hackney Independent Parents (HiP).

It’s a group for parents and carers of children 0-19 years old with disabilities and special educational needs, and its main aims are to provide information and support and the opportunity to influence service delivery. There are three meetings each school term, which cover topics like health, education, leisure, welfare benefits and other support services. They’re open to all parents and carers of children 0-19 years old with disabilities and special educational needs.

Organisations and services that make up Hackney Families Together include Hackney Parent Partnership Service, City and Hackney Carers Centre, the children with disabilities Team, and the portage service. Please call for more information or to be added to the mailing list.
