Registering a stillbirth
When a child is stillborn, the doctor or midwife that was present at the birth or examined the body will issue a medical certificate of stillbirth. This certificate must be taken to the registrar’s office within 42 days. We will register the stillbirth and issue a certificate for the burial or cremation. The certificate is normally then passed to the funeral director who is making the arrangements.
The information needed is the same as as for a live birth, although you do not have to give the child a name.
If the parents are married, either parent can register the birth. If you are not married and want the father’s name to appear on the certificate, both parents must attend the registration.
